Product Care Instructions

Introduction to Leather Goods

Over time, you may notice your piece naturally softening and developing a unique patina. Subtle characteristics such as natural marks, wrinkles, and visible grain are inherent to genuine leather and should be embraced as part of its character. These natural variations are a testament to the authenticity and individuality of each piece, allowing it to evolve beautifully and carry a story of its own.

To help preserve the original shape of your piece, avoid overfilling or overpacking it. When not in use, store it in the protective felt provided at purchase and keep it in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Avoid storing leather goods in boxes for extended periods or near direct sources of heat, as excessive heat may cause the leather to dry and lose its natural suppleness.

Natural Leather

Our natural, vegetable-tanned cowhide leather is deeply rooted in the heritage of KAYA. Recognised for its natural transparency, the leather reveals subtle characteristics such as veins, wrinkles, and variations in grain—natural signs that reflect its untreated character.

Delicate and susceptible to scratches, this leather gradually develops a rich amber patina, becoming softer and more supple with time. Each piece develops its own distinctive patina, shaped by how it is carried, handled, and cared for. This evolution, together with the marks acquired through use, becomes part of the piece’s unique journey and character.

If the leather comes into contact with water, gently blot the affected area immediately using a clean, light-coloured, lint-free, absorbent cloth. Do not rub the surface.

Avoid using solvents, chemicals, or commercial leather-care products. Home remedies intended to darken or condition the leather—such as mink oil, saddle soap, leather lotions, or other substances—should never be applied, as they may compromise the quality and integrity of the leather over time.

If the leather becomes stained before its patina has fully developed, do not attempt to clean or treat the affected area. Allow the leather to naturally darken over time, as the stain may gradually blend into the developing patina.

Calfskin & Cowhide Leathers

Calfskin and cowhide leathers are carefully selected for their refinement, suppleness, and silky touch. Through a rigorous selection process, only the finest hides are chosen to meet the highest quality standards. As natural materials, these leathers may feature subtle characteristics such as veins, wrinkles, and variations in grain.

To preserve their natural beauty and performance, avoid applying commercial cleaners or treatments. Contact with oils, makeup, perfumes, creams, hand sanitiser, and other substances may alter the appearance of the leather or cause staining.

For light surface marks, gently wipe the leather with a soft, clean, slightly damp, light-coloured cloth. Avoid excessive moisture and allow the leather to dry naturally.

General Care Instructions

To preserve the beauty, character, and shape of your piece for as long as possible, we recommend following these care guidelines:

  • Avoid contact with abrasive or rough surfaces that may scratch or damage the leather. Do not place the piece directly on the floor.
  • Keep the leather away from oily substances, hand sanitiser, cosmetics, and other products that may stain or degrade the surface.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with materials that may transfer colour or pigments onto the leather or canvas.
  • Protect your piece from humidity, rain, and excessive moisture. Keep it away from direct sources of heat, including radiators and hot car interiors.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which may cause the colour of the leather or canvas to change over time.
  • If the leather, canvas, or lining becomes soiled, gently clean the surface with a soft, light-coloured cloth. Use a dry cloth for leather and a slightly damp cloth for canvas.
  • When not in use, store your piece in the protective box or felt provided at purchase, as appropriate. Remove detachable accessories before storage, as they may leave marks or impressions on the leather.
  • To maintain the original shape of your piece, avoid overloading or overfilling it.
  • Each piece is designed to be carried in a specific manner. We recommend following the intended carrying method, as carrying the piece differently may affect its shape, usability, and durability over time.

With proper care, the natural character of your leather piece will continue to evolve, becoming uniquely yours with every wear and every journey
